Support the project

‘A Matter of Life and Death and Life’ is a major project with highly ambitious educational and artistic goals.

The project builds on the similarly structured ‘Stem Cells – Reaching for the Sky’ project in 2008/9, funded by the Wellcome Trust, in which over 1000 school pupils and adults engaged with the area of stem cell research through creative activity or performances.

‘A Matter of Life and Death and Life’ has received a further major funding award from the Wellcome Trust. This award contributes towards the costs of employing a team of professional artists, who work with students to develop ideas in response to a series of science – led workshops, supporting them in building a multi-arts performance for pupils from local primary schools, secondary schools and adult audiences. These are presented in workshop days for pupils and followed by a ‘Question Time’ at evening performances.

The project partners NHS Blood and Transplant, Donor Family Network and Transplant Sport UK provide the project with essential scientific expertise and real-life experience.

Through this project:

  • Pupils at Saint Gregory’s Catholic College will engage in depth with an important, practical and ethically challenging area of bio-medicine. Pupils will connect science to the arts, gaining experience of working with peers and professionals in staging an innovative arts show, and in sharing their ideas and insights with a wide audience.
  • Local primary and secondary schools in and near Bath will be introduced to a new area of science, responding creatively in workshops and seeing the outcome of pupils’ work developed in the show.
  • Public audiences will experience an innovative, multi-arts performance which will present challenging familiar and unfamiliar issues in a new way.
